Reflection on Semester Readings (RWS 1301) Fall 2014

Overall I think the various semester readings were great and

each author had something to offer for everyone to learn.  They had

their own ideas on their topics. One particular reading that changed

my perspective on my inner thoughts on literacy was "The Joy of

Reading and Writing" by Sherman Alexie. I always underestimated

reading and writing but this article made me realize how these two

are a part of our everyday lives.  I used to hate literacy and

particularly, writing.  Now I actually do not mind writing at all.  It's

something we live with and is attached to us.  An article that I also enjoyed

reading was the "Aggressive Egg" by David Freeman.  I enjoyed writing on this article and I also enjoyed being able to identify the rhetorical situation as well as the different rhetoricians that are present within the article.

Yes, some of the readings were very dry and simply not interesting at all although I did read them nonetheless.  Some of the readings I did not like were "The Concept of Discourse Communities" by John Swales and "Intertextuality and Discourse Communities" by James Porter.  The actual major assignment which was the Discourse Ethnography was honestly a lot more fun than reading these articles.  I got to interview a police officer and ex-marine which was what I liked about writing the Discourse Ethnography.
